Item-specific Precautions

Pharmaceutical goods
When importing medicines and other products (medicines, quasi-drugs, cosmetics, medical devices), an import sales license is required under the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law.
In order to obtain a licence for the import and sale of pharmaceutical products, it is necessary to obtain a licence for each sales office, which must have structural facilities of the prescribed standard, and each sales office must have a responsible technician (e.g. pharmacist).
The application for a permit is submitted to the Minister of Health and Welfare via the prefectural governor and the permit is issued via the prefectural governor.
When importing pharmaceuticals and other products (medicines, quasi-drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices), an import and sales license under the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law is required.
A. [ Medicines and quasi-drugs ] Up to 2 months’ supply in terms of use and dosage
B. [ Cosmetics ] No more than 24 pieces of one item (item in the pharmaceutical classification) in standard size
C. [ Medical equipment ] Minimum packaging unit for household medical equipment and other items that may be used by the general public
Alcoholic beverages
If you want to import and sell alcoholic beverages, you need a liquor license.
A licence can be applied for and granted by the tax office (customs department), but it is important to note that there are restrictions on the conditions of the licence (the types of products that can be sold and how they can be sold).
You will need to notify the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of your importation.
Importation for personal consumption (in quantities of up to 10 kg) is free, but customs duty, liquor tax and consumption tax are levied on the value of the import.
Vegetables and fruit

A food notification under the Food Sanitation Law is required, as is a plant quarantine under the Plant Protection Law.

Phytosanitary certificate (issued by the government of the exporting country)
Soil is not allowed to be imported, so please wash your plants well before importing them to avoid contamination.
In Japan there are some plants that can be imported and some plants that cannot be imported according to the Plant Protection Law.

Clothing
The tax rate for clothing varies according to the material it is made of: leather, fur, vinyl, textile, etc.
For woven items, the tax rate depends on the amount of fur used, while for knitted garments the rate depends on the knitting method.
If fur or leather is used, it is necessary to check the scientific name to see if it falls under Corporate identityTES.
Please also pay attention to trademarks and indications of origin as there are issues of trademark rights and misidentification of origin.
Bags
In general, bags are taxed at different rates depending on their material, size and whether they are plated with precious metals or not, making it difficult to classify them on paper.
For leather bags, the scientific name of the animal used to make the leather may be required due to Corporate identityTES regulations.
It is important to ensure that the imported goods do not fall under the category of illicit goods (e.g. fake brands).
Footwear
Shoes made of leather may be subject to a higher tariff if a tariff quota (T/Q) has not been obtained from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
If even a small part of the product is made of leather or fur, you need to check whether it is regulated by Corporate identity.
Please pay attention to trademarks and origin indications, as there are issues of trademark rights and misidentification of origin.
Animals

Animal quarantine in accordance with the Rabies Prevention Law. Depending on the country of export and the type of animal, there is a possibility of detention for several weeks.
[Beef, horse meat, pork, poultry, etc.]
Animal quarantine is carried out in accordance with the Livestock Infectious Diseases Prevention Act, and food products are notified in accordance with the Food Hygiene (Meat Products) Act.
Health and hygiene certificates (issued by the government of the exporting country) should be placed in the refrigerator on arrival and should follow the instructions on the arrival information.
Seafood

Depending on the species, an import quota system applies.

Shellfish poisoning tests are available depending on the area and species sampled.
Depending on the country of export and the sea area in which the fish is collected, the fish may be tested for Vibrio cholerae.

※ Note : The first time a product is imported, it must be tested for additives and other substances before it can be imported.You can continue to import for one year on the basis of your inspection results.
Household Goods

Tableware and cooking utensils, kitchen and bed linen
The utensils must be notified to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare under the Food Sanitation Law.
Some materials need to be tested.
Some ceramics and glass may not be imported, depending on the amount of lead and cadmium tested for.
In the case of linen, silk products are regulated by the country of origin and the country of import.

Outdoor equipment
The tax rate differs for each item, such as fishing equipment, golf equipment, ski equipment, camping equipment, etc.
